Description
Teapot with truncated pyriform body, straight tapering spout on applied molded footring, applied molding inset with meander wire at lip, seamed and molded silver handle sockets and wooden C-scroll handle, loose cover with flange, shoulder of cover with incised spiral gadrooning, border of stamped leaves edging chased leafy whirl at base of gadrooned silver button finial (strainer pierced through body at base of the spout, with losses at center of strainer piercing. Handle reset if not replaced, old repairs at base and old break at lip. Inscription: Engraved on one side of body with initials in reverse cipher within scrolled, foliated cartouche with floral chaplet above: AJ.
Other side engraved with arms of the Jay family, engraving rubbed: [Argent a chevron gules between in chief a demi-sun in splendor between two mullets argent and in base a bird on a rock] / [two entwined hearts as a crest, surrounded by festoons, swags, and two cherub supporters] / [right cherub holding arrows and bowknot.] Mark: Unmarked
