Description
A: White paper leaf fan printed in black ink with images of a stone lantern, a side wheel ship with sails and kanji describing the occasion on which it was given. Monture of plain bamboo; metal rivet. B: Cardboard box with lid, covered with celadon green paper with wax paper cover for fan. (Box not shown in photograph.) Souvenir of the Townsend Harris gravesite rededication in Green-Wood Cemetery on Thursday, July 24, 1986. Harris, a successful merchant, was a president of the New York City Board of Education who was instrumental in the founding of the Free Academy which became the City College of New York. He was also the first Japanese American Consul General in Japan at the start of commercial relations with that country.
