Accession number 97.224.311.50
Unique identifier MN122433
Description Album compiled for the 1959 Pulitzer Prize for outstanding examples of news photography. | Photograph by John Duprey, published October 19, 1958. | While Sister Miriam Barbara waits to take him to his new quarters, this toddler casts a last look at the only home he remembers. While a special force of 20 cops scurried about controlling traffic, 275 children of the New York Foundling Hospital paraded across Third Ave. as the hospital moved into its new $10,000,000 home. Infants were carried by nurses, nuns and volunteers. Toddlers clutching toys and dolls, were taken by hand . It all went off with military precision. Most of the children, all under 2, are from broken homes. The hospital is run by the Sisters of Mercy.
