The organization was founded in 1874 by a group of men, most of whom where in the cast of the Dion Boucicault play "The Shaugraun" then enjoying a successful run at Wallack's Theatre, as a dining and social alternative to pubs and parks as a gathering place for gentlemen of the theatre. In 1904 the Lambs' Club moved into the building and theatre designed for them by Stanford White, located at 44th Street, east of Broadway. One of the most famous functions of the club were the Lambs' Gambols, prductions given for the benefit of various charitable organizations.
