Don Freeman (1908-1978) was born in San Diego, California but came to New York in 1928 to study at the Art Students League. He was a student under John Sloan and Harry Wickey, both associated with the Ash Can school, and went on to have a successful career as a fine artist, newspaper illustrator, cartoonist, lithographer, book illustrator, author and children's book illustrator. The City Museum recently added to its collection of work by Freeman through a generous donation of drawings and prints from Michael Karp.
