Description Inverted pyriform kettle on circular foot hinged and pinned to cast circular stand with four splayed feet joined by anthemia. Shoulder with chased floral border on granulated ground centering cast portrait medal lion on each side, domed side-hinged cover with cast cherub finial, fixed bail handle with ivory insulators and grotesque mask at each end, on circular cone-shaped base edged with die rolled floral border. Cast profile portraits applied to surface, loop handles with applied grotesque mask at center, loose cover with die-rolled Greek key border soldered on at right angle with ornamented surface inverted, to form lip, straight sloping sides engraved with crest, raised band of die-rolled Greek key border applied to top of cover, and finials cast armorial lions holding blank shields on circular disks attached to center of covers. Inscription: Engraved on body: George Peabody / to / Cyrus W. Field / in testimony and commemoration / of an act of very high / commercial integrity and honor. / New-York / 24 Nov. 1866. Coat of arms engraved on other side of body. Mark: Marked on base: S & M / [lion passant] [anchor] [Gothic G] / 390.
