Description
One of a pair of ewers with inverted pyriform body with sides incurving to deep shoulder, applied acanthus leafage at base of the body, wide band of repoussé-chased flowers and leaves on upper body below narrow applied acanthus-leaf band at shoulder. Shaped flaring lip with applied die-rolled leaf-and-flower border at the rim, cast scroll handle with chased and engraved acanthus leaves and high splayed foot with central knop with narrow band of chased and engraved flowers and leaves continuing to circular base with broad band of repoussé-chased acanthus leaves on stippled ground on upper surface and applied die-rolled baseband of garlands of fruit and flowers. Inscription: Engraved on center of body below spout: Presented by the Firemen of the City of New York / to Jameson Cox, Esqr. as a testimony of esteem, & in token / of their approbation for the faithful discharge of his duties / as Chief Engineer of the Fire Department / April 8th 1829. Mark: Struck twice on base: S. Richard.
