Octagonal pyriform jug with paneled body, conforming domed cover surmounted by octagonal finial, flushing hinged to body, stepped footring, paneled spout, cast S-scroll handle with furl, and body flat-chased with sunflowers, pendant blossoms, and foliated scrolls. Inscription: Engraved within cartouche under spout: Presented to / William De Groot / BY / Newbold & Cruft, / for his prompt & faithful / services in saving their / books and papers / at the great fire that / occurred in New York / July 19th 1845. Mark: Struck on base: GALE & HAYDEN / [profile head] [eagle].
