Description
Silver tankard with straight sides tapering from an applied molded baseband, with saw-toothed engraving and cut-card work above, to a molded lip with saw-toothed engraving, stepped flat cover with flange serrated and with pierced heart in front, cast corkscrew thumbpiece with punched dot motif, scroll handle with applied cast lion couchant below molded hinge-plate ending in a cast satyr mask on oval disc applied to a shaped terminal. Inscription: Engraved on front with reverse cipher "AJ", within a feathery cartouche with bowknot at the base, for Augustus Jay (1665-1751) or Augustus & his wife, Anna Maria Bayard, married 1697. Engraved "EI" on the handle for their granddaughter, Eva Jay, daughter of Peter & Maria (Van Cortlandt), born 1728. Mark: Marked "CVB" conjoined in heart to left of handle under rim & on top of the cover in front of the thumb piece.
