Description
Tankard with straight-sided body tapering from base to lip, applied molding at base and lip, hinged, stepped, flat-topped cover with crenate lip at front, cast double-cusp thumb piece, S-scroll handle, and plain handle terminal. The top of the cover is engraved with a foliate wreath. Inscription: Engraved on the body with coat-of-arms and crest of Van Cortlandt family ; engraved on handle with block-cap initials "C/I*E" for Jacobus and Eva Philipse Van Cortlandt. Mark: Barred "IB" over [quatrefoil in shield] struck once on the body near the rim, left of handle, once on underside of the base, off-center, and once on the cover on the rim.
