Description
Intricately pierced Chinese ivory brisé; guards carved and undercut in flora, foliate and fauna motif; blades repeat motif in completely undercut and vertically pierced linear ground, punctuated by solid bands (original set with silver paillettes) framing central zone holding two lateral ovoid medallions containing pagodas in stylized oriental landscape, central horizontal medallion solid, unadorned ivory (original stamped with commemorative image in ink.) Mother-of-pearl studs, silver metal rivet; upper blade zone pierced with geometric chrysanthemums and threaded with 0.8cm wide white silk ribbon. Brick red cardboard squared tube box, conical lid, and white gummed label.Carried by Sarah Cornelia Tappen Clinton, wife of Governor George Clinton of New York, at inaugural ball on May 7, 1789, for President George Washington in New York City.
