Description Circular, inverted pyriform cup with everted lip, on stepped circular pedestal base, die-rolled foliate-and-shell borders at waist, juncture of body and base, and top of foot. The raised lower body is repoussé chased with grapevine and grape clusters motif, section above waist also repoussé chased forming laurel-wreath reserves, and two cast broken-scroll handles with acanthus furls. Inscription: Engraved within reserve on one side: 'To Benjamin Drake, M. D./Chairman/of the General Committee of/Democratic Whig Young Men/for 1841/from his / Associate Delegates" and above wreath motto: "Palmam qui meruit ferat" (rough translation: "Let him who has earned it bear the reward") and below wreath: "New York City, January 1, A. D. 1842"; On reverse: "Edward Skidmore/from/d*T and A*E*S/1881"; Within reserve: "A Mark of their high/esteem of his official/conduct and political services./A proof of the warm feeling/of friendship & respect they/entertain towards him". Mark: Struck on outer edge of the foot: "Wm. Thomson" in script within conforming enclosure.
