Description
Ewer with urn-shaped body on domed circular foot, repoussé chased decoration of Rococo scrolls and naval motifs including ships, flags, and guns on body, oak leaves and acorns around throat, and eagle flanked by flags under lip. The S-scroll handle is a double strand of rope tied in an overhand knot with pendant anchor and chain, and cast coral and shell forms applied to foot below wavelike chasing. Inscription: Engraved in reserve on body: Presented to / Admiral D. G. Farragut / by / Commander Charles Hunter / and the / officers and crew of the U.S. Steamer Montgomery, / as a mark of / respect and kind remembrance. / July 4th, 1863. Engraved in small script to the right: The Admirals share of a waif which they insisted on his acceptance.
