Description Covered ewer with circular body composed of three sections: raised rounded lower section rising from stepped circular pedestal base edged with die-rolled foliate scroll and floret border, second band of same border applied to top of base, band of die-rolled tongue-and-dart border applied at juncture of body and base, band of die-rolled floral scroll border applied at lower handle juncture, band of beading above, seamed straight-sided midsection with inscription topped with wider version of borders used on foot, seamed incurved and stepped upper section with repeat of lower floral scroll border, applied beading extending around lip of integral spout, and cover with flush hinge and circular domed, repoussé chased with leaves below cast center basket-of-flowers finial, and hollow handle cast in form of opposed C-scrolls with furl. Inscription: Engraved on one side: Presented by the Board of Health of the City of New York / TO / N. Edson Sheldon M.D. / for professional services gratuitously rendered to the poor of the / Second Ward/ during the prevalence of the Cholera A.D. 1832 Mark: Marked on base: [man in profile] G & M [eagle.]
