Barnum's American Museum. Thursday, January 31, 1861. Great increase of attractions! Old Adams' California menagerie and others

Creator New York Herald Job Office
Accession number 49.121
Unique identifier MNY129746
Description The most wonderful and extraordinary collection of wild animals from the Rocky Mountains, comprising grizzly bears, cinnamon bears, golden bears, hyena bears, fighting bears, dancing bears, screeching bears, climbing bears, white bears and the great mammoth bear, Samson – the largest and most ferocious bear ever captured alive, weighing near 2,000 pounds. The Manager is also gratified to announce a great canary bird show by the Excelsior Canary Bird Fanciers’ Association, consisting exclusively of Belgian canary birds bred in New York, from imported stock. Last day but two of those wild African savages consisting of a Hottentot, Kaffir, Fingo, Zulu and Bushman, who positively close their exhibition here next Saturday, preparatory to their departure for their native land. What is it? – or Man Monkey – the most singular creature ever known – evidently the connecting link between the human and brute creation. $150 speckled brook trout, weighing 5 pounds 10 ½ ounces, caught in the township of Andes, Delaware County, in this state. Visitors will observe that the light in two of our saloons is materially improved by the use of Wyberd’s Patent Diffusive Daylight Reflector, a novel and effective means of distributing light into dark places. Positively no free list. Admittance to everything, 25 cents. Children under 10 years, 15 cents each. Tickets for parquet or first balcony seats in the lecture room, 15 cents extra. For children under 10 years, 10 cents. The two living Aztec children, a male and female aged 17 and 24 years, said to be descendants of the Sacerdotal Caste, now nearly extinct, of the ancient Aztec founders of the ruined temples of Central America and Yucatan. Old Neptune, king of the ocean, the living black sea lion. Albino family from Madagascar, born of perfectly black parents, yet as white as snow, white hair, pink eyes, and every way the most singular human beings. 30 monster snakes varying in length from 10 to 30 feet, the largest ever seen together. They are on exhibition at all hours, and at intervals are exhibited on a platform by the great snake charmer, in whose hands they are perfectly harmless. Living happy family, grand aquarial garden, living seal, wax figures, and 850,000 curiosities from every part of the world. Thursday, January 31, 1861, this afternoon at 3, the domestic drama in three acts by W. T. Moncrieff, “Smiles and Tears; or, The Lear of Private Life”. Evening at 7:30, for the fifth time, a great drama from the French, “Lady of St. Tropez”. Miss Dora Dawron, the wonder and extraordinary double-voiced singer, will appear at each dramatic performance in a popular duet, in which she will exhibit her wonderful power of voice in singing alternately a deep and powerful tenor, and a sweet and delicate soprano, dressed in the very singular costume, one half as a man, the other half as a lady. The management beg leave to announce to their patrons, that they have secured a dramatization by a popular author, of Wilkie Collins’ great novel, called “The Woman in White”, now in active preparation.
