Description The painting depicts a fort on an artificial stone island with waves crashing in the front and boats sailing in the background.  The fort bears a sign that reads "Castle Garden."  100 yards off the Battery, it became a center of entertainment from 1823-1855, after which the city reclaimed the fort and used it as an immigration station until 1890.  The fort was originally built to protect New York Harbor from British invasion, 1808-11.
